A Bold, Retro-Inspired Wedding at Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, MN

Newlywed couple looks at each other inside a Gunflint Lodge cabin with the bride holding her colorful bouquet.

Some weddings feel beautiful. Some weddings feel completely, unmistakably like the couple.

This colorful spring wedding at Gunflint Lodge in Grand Marais, Minnesota was the latter.

Tucked along Gunflint Lake near the Canadian border, Gunflint Lodge is the kind of place that naturally lends itself to an outdoorsy, North Shore wedding. Surrounded by forest, water, and the rugged beauty of northern Minnesota, it would have been easy to let the setting do all the talking. Instead, this couple brought their own unmistakable style to the celebration and the result was one of the most creative and memorable weddings we've had the opportunity to design.

Their vision? A little 1970s retro. A little Vegas. A lot of color. And absolutely no interest in a traditional wedding.

And we were completely on board.

Bold Wedding Flowers That Broke All the Rules

One of the things we loved most about this wedding was the couple's willingness to embrace color.

Rather than sticking with a traditional wedding palette, they chose vibrant shades of red, hot pink, orange, yellow, and green. The colors were layered throughout the day with funky textures, unexpected details, playful patterns, and plenty of personality.

The couple had one of the clearest visions of almost any wedding we've worked on. They knew what they liked, they knew what they didn't, and they trusted us with the creative freedom to turn their ideas into flowers.

That combination made designing their wedding incredibly fun.

The result wasn't simply a collection of colorful arrangements. Every floral element was connected, creating a cohesive wedding design that felt intentional from the moment guests arrived.

A Vintage Television Welcome Sign

Guests were welcomed to the ceremony with flowers arranged atop a vintage television which was a fitting introduction to a wedding that wasn't afraid to play with nostalgia.

Colorful flowers continued down the ceremony aisle, appearing in unexpected places and creating moments of visual interest throughout the outdoor setting. Floral accents on chairs honored loved ones, adding a sentimental layer to the playful design.

The ceremony flowers felt perfectly at home among the trees and natural landscape of Gunflint Lodge while still reflecting the couple's retro-inspired aesthetic.

Disco Balls, Pancake Tins & Flowers

If there was one thing this wedding proved, it's that your wedding flowers don't have to look like anyone else's.

During cocktail hour, disco ball vases filled with colorful flowers brought the 1970s-meets-Vegas inspiration to life. Guests enjoyed signature cocktails, a temporary tattoo station, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate before dinner.

And then there were the pancake tins.

Because why have traditional wedding centerpieces when you can collect vintage pancake and syrup tins and fill them with flowers?

The couple planned a breakfast-inspired meal for their guests, another wonderfully unexpected choice that fit their personalities perfectly. We filled their collection of vintage tins with bright, textural floral arrangements, creating centerpieces that were both functional to the overall theme and completely unique to them.

It's exactly the kind of detail that makes a wedding memorable.

A Colorful, Textural Bridal Bouquet

The bride's bouquet brought all of those ideas together.

Bride and bridesmaids hold bright colorful bouquets at a spring wedding at Gunflint Lodge.

It was big, lush, colorful, and full of texture, combining the vibrant wedding palette with an organic, garden-inspired shape. Red, hot pink, orange, yellow, and green worked together rather than competing, creating a bouquet that felt joyful and a little bit unexpected.

The wedding party flowers continued the same visual story. With the bridesmaids and groomsmen dressed in brown, the bright flowers had plenty of room to stand out.

Every bouquet and boutonniere was designed to feel connected to the larger floral design while still having its own personality.

Even the groom's boutonniere included a yellow rose; this was a small detail that had much meaning and memory to the groom.

A Wedding That Was Completely Their Own

What made this celebration so special wasn't simply the color palette or the retro-inspired details. It was how intentionally the couple made the entire weekend their own.

They rescue greyhounds, and that part of their lives became part of the wedding story, too.

They created signature cocktails.

They incorporated disco balls and playing cards.

They served breakfast instead of a traditional wedding dinner.

They created a temporary tattoo station for cocktail hour.

And before guests even arrived at Gunflint Lodge, they received a handmade magazine-style guidebook for the weekend.

The Most Thoughtful Wedding Weekend Guide

The couple's wedding guide deserves its own mention because it perfectly captured the level of thought behind this celebration.

Each guest received a handmade magazine-style booklet filled with information about the wedding weekend, incredible photographs from the couple's previous trips along the North Shore, introductions to members of the wedding party, fun facts about their friends and family, and recommendations for restaurants, coffee shops, donut stops, sightseeing, and other places to visit along the way.

It didn't feel like a standard wedding itinerary.

It felt like a magazine created specifically for their guests.

And that same thoughtfulness carried through to the flowers.

Every detail had a reason for being there.

When Your Wedding Flowers Can Be Anything You Want

This wedding is a wonderful reminder that wedding flowers don't have to follow a formula.

Your bouquet doesn't have to be white.

Your centerpieces don't have to be traditional.

Your ceremony flowers don't have to look like everyone else's.

And your wedding doesn't have to fit neatly into a particular style.

If you have a very clear vision (even if that vision involves bold colors, vintage objects, unexpected materials, or ideas that don't immediately seem like "wedding flowers") that's something we love working with.

Our job isn't to make your wedding look like a wedding we've already designed.

It's to take the ideas that make sense to you and turn them into a cohesive floral design that feels unmistakably yours.

Full-Service Wedding Flowers at Gunflint Lodge

Designing a wedding this far up the North Shore also means thinking beyond the flowers themselves. Getting everything to Gunflint Lodge, preparing the arrangements, installing ceremony flowers, styling reception tables, placing all of the individual floral details, and cleaning everything up afterward takes planning and coordination.

That's where full-service floral design makes a difference.

For this wedding, we handled the floral logistics so the couple could focus on the people, experiences, and celebration that mattered most to them. Every floral element was placed and styled before guests arrived, allowing the wedding day to unfold without the couple needing to worry about who was setting up flowers.

The flowers were there to be enjoyed, not managed.

And that's exactly how it should feel.

A North Shore Wedding Full of Personality

From the colorful floral welcome sign to the disco ball vases, vintage pancake tins, bold bridal bouquet, wedding party flowers, and thoughtful personal details, this Gunflint Lodge wedding was a perfect example of what can happen when a couple isn't afraid to make their wedding completely their own.

It was colorful. It was playful. It was outdoorsy. It was wonderfully unconventional.

Most importantly, it felt like them.

And honestly? Those are some of our favorite weddings to design.
